Feelings: Their Origins, Their Intentions, and the God Who Rules Them
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins..." — Jeremiah 17:9–10 (KJV)
In a world that commands us to "follow your heart" and live according to "our truth," we are constantly tempted to elevate our feelings to the position of absolute authority. But our feelings were never created to sit on the throne of our lives. They are seasonal, shifting, and deeply vulnerable to the fallen state of the flesh.
When we examine feelings through the light of Scripture, we discover their true origin, their intended purpose, and how to bring them into joyful surrender to the God who created us.

1. The Origin of Feelings: Indicators, Not Guides
God created us with emotional capacity because He Himself feels—He loves, He grieves, He rejoices, and He is righteous in His jealousy. Our feelings were given to us as indicators, not guides. They are like the gauges on a dashboard: they tell us what is happening under the hood, but they were never meant to steer the vehicle.
-
When feelings lead: We are tossed to and fro by every changing wind, reacting to life based on fear, offense, or temporary comfort.
-
When Truth leads: We stand firm upon the Rock of Ages, acknowledging our emotions without allowing them to dictate our obedience to God.
"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." — Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)
2. The Enemy's Deception: Targeting the Soul
The enemy rarely attacks us with obvious lies first; he targets our feelings to subtly turn our focus inward toward "me, myself, and I." Deception thrives in emotional exaggeration. A feeling of disappointment, if left unchecked by Scripture, becomes bitterness. A moment of fear, if not brought to the cross, becomes a lifestyle of unbelief.
This is why apostle Paul warns us to guard our minds and souls against the subtle traps of the flesh:
"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ." — 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV)
Every feeling must be brought to the altar and tested against the Word of God. If a feeling exalts itself above what God has spoken, it must be cast down so that God alone receives glory in our thoughts.
3. God's Divine Intention: Feelings as an Offering of Worship
What is God's intention for our emotional life? To draw us back to Himself.
When you feel weak, it is meant to drive you to His strength. When you feel sorrowful, it is meant to direct you to the Comforter. When you feel joy, it is meant to burst forth in praise to the Father who gives every good and perfect gift.
"Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness." — Psalm 48:1 (KJV)
Our feelings are transformed when they become instruments of praise. Instead of letting sadness turn into despair, we bring it to Him in prayer. Instead of letting anger turn into sin, we yield our rights to His divine justice. In every emotion, God provides a pathway for us to glorify Him, acknowledging that He alone is Sovereign over our inner world.
A Prayer of Praise and Surrender
Lord God Almighty, Creator of the heavens and the earth, we exalt Your holy Name. Forgive us for the times we have idolized our feelings, letting our fluctuating emotions guide our choices instead of Your unchanging Truth. We confess that our hearts are prone to wander, but You are faithful and merciful. Search our hearts today, Lord. Purify our desires, reign over our minds, and let every emotion we experience be surrendered to You as a sacrifice of praise. May Jesus Christ receive all the honor, power, and glory in our lives. Amen.
